While Volrath took her place aboard the Weatherlight, Takara toiled in the Stronghold’s dungeons. Starke’s deck is packed with trickery and ways to rearrange the field of play. The deck also employs several different strategies pulled from Volrath’s storyline: shadow, slivers, and flowstone. His story starts in Jamuraa, represented by white, he’s corrupted in Rath (represented by black) and has his revenge against Starke in Mercadia (red). The three colors of Volrath’s deck represent the three “chapters” of his interactions with Starke. In this duel deck their manipulations and double-dealings can play out over and over again. The fates of Volrath and Starke are intertwined throughout the story of the Rath Cycle and surrounding expansions. Ultimately Volrath’s plan was thwarted and he retreated back to Rath, half dead. He finally revealed his true form, murdered Starke (who never learned the true fate of his daughter), and tried to steal the Weatherlight. On Mercadia, Volrath (still disguised as Takara) manipulated the crew of the Weatherlight and pitted them against each other. But Takara had been replaced by a shapeshifted Volrath, hiding in plain sight. Starke guided the Weatherlight, with Takara aboard, away from Rath and Volrath’s stronghold to the plane of Mercadia. Volrath hoped to kill Gerrard, a member of the ship’s crew, but Starke switched sides to try to protect his daughter Takara (who had been rescued by the Weatherlight). Still seeking revenge on Gerrard, Volrath kidnapped the captain of the skyship Weatherlight with Starke’s help. On Rath, Volrath became a master of flowstone, and attempted to gain control of the sliver hive on the plane. There Vuel was consumed by Yawgmoth’s power, reformed into the shapeshifting evincar of Rath, and renamed Volrath. Starke led Vuel through a portal to the plane of Rath, Starke’s home. Vuel gathered the surrounding tribes and attacked his former family, killing many including his father. Later Starke helped Vuel and stoked his lust for revenge, convincing him that Gerrard wanted to take his place as heir. Vuel’s life was saved by his adopted brother Gerrard but he was cast out of the clan for failing the rite. He was required to climb a plateau, but his ritual bodypaint was poisoned by a man named Starke sent to infiltrate the warband by the Phyrexians. On Jamuraa a boy named Vuel, the son of a warchief, faced a rite of passage.
